The short answer
Instagram's API accepts a custom cover image when a Reel is created, so a scheduler can set it — but many do not expose the option and let Instagram pick a frame instead. Upload a dedicated cover image and your grid stops looking accidental.
Step by step
1Design the cover separately from the video
Your cover has two jobs: readable at grid size, and consistent with the covers around it. Treat it as a thumbnail, not as a frame of the video. Vertical 9:16 matching the Reel.
2Upload it alongside the Reel
In snazzy the cover is a second file on the compose form. It is sent to Instagram as the Reel's cover when the post is created.
3Check the grid crop
Instagram shows Reels as a 9:16 card in the Reels tab but crops toward the centre in the profile grid. Keep text away from the top and bottom edges.
What catches people out
- The cover has to be supplied when the Reel is created. It cannot be added by the API afterwards — a scheduler without cover support means changing it manually on every post, forever.
- If no cover is supplied, Instagram picks a frame for you, and it is very often a blurred motion frame from the first second.
- Grid consistency compounds. Covers matter more across twenty posts than on any single one.
